When the Black Press Stood Up for the Jews—and Other Newspapers Didn’t with Eric K. Ward and Nadine Epstein
Thursday, September 25 at 4:00pm, ET / 1:00pm, PT
From 1933 to 1945, Black newspaper owners and editors published articles, editorials, cartoons and letters that condemned the Nazis and sympathized with the plight of the Jews in Europe. In fact, when it became clear that Hitler’s goal was to exterminate Europe’s Jews, the Black press jumped on the story with more gusto than some mainstream media outlets, including the Jewish-owned New York Times. Join Moment Institute Fellow, Eric K. Ward, VP of Race Forward and Moment Editor-in-Chief Nadine Epstein for a conversation about this little-known but important chapter of Black-Jewish history. The discussion will include the direct link between Jim Crow and to Hitlers’ anti-Jewish policies, Black history during this period and the role of the Black press then and now. This program is part of Moment’s Wide River Project.
