Robert S. Greenberger

Robert S. Greenberger was born in Queens, New York. After graduation from Brandeis University he was thrust by his father’s untimely death into his family’s business—a job he didn’t want. One night as he was watching an interview with Peter Osnos, then a reporter for The Washington Post and a friend from Brandeis, he decided that was what he wanted to do. So with a wife, three young sons, and against his mother’s wishes, he promptly sold the business and applied to Columbia Journalism School. Two years after graduation he joined The Wall Street Journal and was soon on the State Department beat covering the Sandinistas in Nicaragua and the Salvadoran Civil Wars. He traveled the world with four secretaries of state beginning with James Baker and ending with Madeline Albright. He covered the fall of...

Why we still write Holocaust fiction

The winners of the 2020 Moment Magazine- Karma Foundation Short Fiction Contest will read from their stories July 29 at a special virtual event that will include a conversation about why Holocaust fiction is still being written and whether it still has lessons for readers. Omer Friedlander, from Tel Aviv, won first place for his story “The Man Who Sold Air in the Holy Land.” Second place went to Linda Brettler from Los Angeles for her story “ Private,” and third place to Rona Arato  from Ontario for her story “Polonaise.” All three will read short excerpts from their work during the event. Ruth Sutton from Pennsylvania received an honorable mention for "Little Miracles.” “We are so excited to introduce these voices to a larger audience,” says Nadine Epstein. “Fiction is just as important as history in telling...

Big Question Project are the kind of conversation the community needs

On May 19 in e-JewishPhilanthropy, Jewish Funders Network president and CEO Andrés Spokoiny cited the urgent need for philanthropic support for “the thinkers, philosophers and theologians among us.”  Disinvestment, he says, has left  the Jewish community  "woefully unprepared to conduct the deep ideological conversations we need." There is hope, however, as some are having those conversations, including Moment: “Notable among them are the new journal of the Shalom Hartman Institute and Sapir, the journal of ideas published by the Maimonides Foundation. Other organizations, like Hadar, are also producing insightful and deep materials. Moment Magazine’s symposia are also remarkable." In addition, because of our latest Big Question Project, "How do you Define Community in the 21st Century?", Nadine was asked to give the keynote address on the subject at the June meeting of the Jewish Federation of Greater Washington.

The Great Latkes Topping Debate of 2020

Washington, DC -- December 10, 2020 -- Combining what many believe to be Jews’ favorite pastimes —arguing and eating—a panel of experts convened by Moment Magazine this week held a spirited debate, moderated by C-SPAN Communication’s Director Howard Mortman, over the best topping for a latke. Following the debate a virtual audience voted on their preference. Traditional favorites applesauce and sour cream came in at 33% and 30%.  Ketchup suffered a significant defeat, despite a brilliantly argued defense that pointed out the vitriol that ketchup-on-latkes eaters are routinely subjected to. Appl- sou- sauce came in third with 25% of the vote, followed by hot sauce and ketchup. Here are some of the arguments put forward on behalf of various toppings: Comedian and author Barry Friedman argued for applesauce based on the major role the apple plays in biblical...
