Iran, Israel and the Iranian Diaspora with Sharon Nazarian and Sarah Breger

For many in the Iranian diaspora, the current conflict involving Iran is not only a geopolitical crisis but a deeply personal moment. Iranian communities around the world—Jews, Muslims, Baháʼís, Zoroastrians and secular Iranians—have found themselves united in an unusually powerful way, speaking out against the regime in Tehran and calling for freedom for the Iranian people. Moment Institute Senior Fellow Dr. Sharon S. Nazarian explores why demonstrations against the Iranian regime—from Australia to Europe to North America—often feature Israeli flags; how diaspora communities that once seemed divided are now finding common cause; and why many activists who rally passionately for Gaza rarely advocate with the same urgency for the freedom of the Iranian people. Nazarian, who was born in Tehran and forced to flee with her family during the 1979 revolution, examines what this rare moment of unity reveals about the Iranian diaspora, the nature of the Iranian regime and the broader struggle for democracy and human rights in the Middle East. In conversation with Moment Editor Sarah Breger.
