Boxing Gym

By Symi Rom-Rymer Lord’s Gym, Austin, Texas: Thwack. Sssssss. Clang, clang, clang. Slapslapslapslap. In a small, white shingled building hidden behind a Goodwill store, posters of famous fights and fighters frozen in position overlap on the walls. Worn boxing rings and masking tape-encased punching bags reign supreme. In this atmosphere of muscles and sweat, Frederick Wiseman’s new film, Boxing Gym unfolds.  Wiseman--the Jewish octogenarian filmmaker whose most recent film La Danse took us into the rarified world of professional ballet, now turns his eye to the equally athletic, if more violent, world of boxing. Boxing Gym (now playing as part of the New York Film Festival), like many of Wiseman’s films, focuses on the minutiae of every day life.  Rarely leaving the confines of Lord’s, everyone and no one is at the center of the story.    Like the gym itself, the film is...

By Michelle Albert Just in time for Passover, Jewcy takes a look at haggadahs that suit the wise, wicked, simple and tongue-tied children in all of us. Check out Moment's article on A New Generation of Haggadah Art. Last week, Israeli police raided a warehouse containing seven tons of matzah with forged kosher certificates. The matzah was made with flour that is not kosher for Passover. Israeli police have warned citizens to be on the lookout for pirated matzah. Over 250 members of Congress have signed a letter addressed to Secretary of State Hilary Clinton that reaffirms their commitment to the "unbreakable" bond between the US and Israel. Lionsgate Entertainment has bought the rights to a film about a box brought to the United States by a Holocaust survivor that apparently contains a Jewish ghost. "It's A Serious Man...

Orange Almond Chocolate Tart

Passover Chocolate Orange Tart with Almond Praline

By Jenna Huntsberger Chocolate, almond, orange - perfect for Passover. If you're really looking to rile up your Jewish friends, ask them about their most detested Passover desserts. We got into just such a discussion at my book club this weekend, and our Jewish members were quick to trot out a litany of complaints. Cakes made with matzoh meal are coarse, sponge cake is dry, cookies taste weird without flour - the kvetching went on and on. Now, as some one who really likes to show off at the holidays, I feel a great deal of sympathy for Jewish bakers. It's really difficult to bake something delicious - or even halfway tasty - without two of the most basic ingredients in baking - flour and leavening. Matzoh meal just doesn't have the same properties as cake flour and,...

By Michelle Albert The newly expanded Jewish Museum in London opened Wednesday. It boasts a 13th century mikvah, an 18th century silver and coral Torah case from Iraq and the boxing shorts worn by Jewish boxer Harry Mizler, Britain's 1934 lightweight boxing champ. Minnesota senator and former funny guy Al Franken brings comedy to congress. Read a profile of Franken from Moment's archives. A new website caters to the edgier side of Chasidim—what the site calls "Chasidim on the fringe." The Republic of Ireland's Foreign Minister, Micheal Martin, criticized the Irish town of Carickmacross for removing the page in its guestbook that was signed by the Israeli Ambassador. Martin said that while he shares Irish concerns over Israeli policy, that does not mean Ireland shouldn't treat the Israeli Ambassador with respect. The now infamous page was torn from the...

Interfaith marriage: ‘enemy of the Jewish people’ or something that should be accepted?

By Talia Ran “Be with whomever you like, as long as you are happy.” A lovely sentiment often said in reference to a person finding that special someone to marry.  While that is all well and good, there is; however, some debate on whether or not it should be said to those of the Jewish faith. A press release regarding last week’s San Francisco meeting of the Central Conference of American Rabbis announced a conceptual shift in the Reform movement’s approach to marriage. The largest group of Jewish clergy in the world has decided rather than spend time and energy on discouraging Jews from marrying non-Jews, they will begin to focus on outreach to intermarried couples, encouraging mixed-faith couples to be active in Jewish life—including creating special blessings for major life events such as weddings and funerals. In addition, they...

By Michelle Albert Snuggle up with popcorn and a blanket and watch Heeb's countdown of the 100 greatest Jewish movie moments. To top off your Jewish movie experience, check out Moment's feature on great Jewish films. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanayhu is scrambling for a way to fix Israel's Jerusalem-settlement faux pas. British Prime Minister Gordon Brown honored Brits who saved Jews during the Holocaust. An Israeli advertising company created an ad that reenacts the footage taken of an assassination of a Hamas militant by Israel's Mossad. The company says it's a spoof, but it just seems like poor taste. A Pennsylvania woman who calls herself JihadJane has been arrested for recruiting potential jihadists to help kill a Swedish artist who published a cartoon featuring the prophet Mohammad with a dog's body. By Michelle Albert Washington, DC has legalized gay marriage. The Yad Vashem Holocaust Museum is pushing what might be the last call for names of Jews murdered during the Holocaust. In Gaza, Hamas has banned male hairdressers from cutting and styling women's hair. The eight male hairdressers in women's hair salons in Gaza are out of a job. What's next, banning women from seeing male doctors? Where will the women go? Though New York Fashion Week is over, we can still feel solidarity with the fashionistas at Paris Fashion Week with a game of Jewish fashion geography. Jonathan Safran Foer really likes his vegetables.
