What is Kol Nidre?
Kol Nidre is the first prayer service of Yom Kippur that occurs from late daytime to the end of sunset. The phrase “Kol Nidre” translates to “All Vows.”

What are the Roots of Kol Nidre?
Some scholars of Jewish history theorize that Kol Nidre was adopted in medieval times after many Jews were forced to convert and swear vows to other faiths. Kol Nidre was the solution to welcoming these Jews back into the religion by relieving them of vows made against their will.
How is Kol Nidre Recited?
Kol Nidre is chanted melodically by a congregation’s cantor (chazan), or a clergy member who leads in song and prayer. The declaration is chanted three times with the congregation responding.
