By | Nov 14, 2025

About

Alice Wairimu Nderitu, the recipient of Moment’s 2025 Ruth Bader Ginsburg Human Rights Award, is one of the world’s few women mediators of ethnic conflicts. She discusses how a visit to Auschwitz changed the way she approaches conflict resolution and explains her understanding of the definition of genocide as coined by Polish-Jewish lawyer Raphael Lemkin. The Kenyan-born Nderitu also talks about her time serving as United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Special Advisor to the Secretary-General on the Prevention of Genocide from November 2021 to November 2024 and the pressure from within the UN to retract her statements about Hamas after October 7, a petition to remove her from her position and the threats made against her and her family. Nderitu, now the Global President of Isōko Centre for Humanity in Rwanda, is in conversation with Moment Editor Sarah Breger.
