The history of the Alpha Omega US Dental Foundation reflects a deep commitment to service, resilience, and community. In 1907, a group of Jewish dental students in Baltimore founded Alpha Omega after being excluded from other professional organizations because of antisemitism. Over the decades, the organization expanded its mission and impact. In 1964, fraternity members established the Hadassah-Hebrew University School of Dental Medicine in Jerusalem, followed by the creation of the Tel Aviv University School of Dental Medicine. Through the years, the Foundation has supported dentists, dental students, and communities through a variety of programs and initiatives.
Yet nothing could have prepared Israel’s dental community for the aftermath of October 7, 2023. Dentists and dental students were called upon to undertake the heartbreaking and harrowing task of helping identify victims of the brutal attacks.
Join Dr. Laurie Gordon-Shaw, past president of the Illinois Alumni Chapter of the Alpha Omega International Dental Society and Dr. Michael Spektor, former chairman of the Board of the Alpha Omega Foundation, for a conversation exploring the legacy and ongoing work of Alpha Omega. The discussion will highlight current efforts to rebuild the dental clinic at Kibbutz Be’eri, as well as Renewing Minds, Restoring Hope, an initiative founded by Gordon-Shaw that provides critical PTSD therapy and mental health support to Israel’s dental community in the wake of trauma and war. In conversation with Moment Editor Sarah Breger.
