ABOUT MOMENT
Named by co-founder and Nobel Prize Laureate Elie Wiesel for the vibrant Warsaw daily Der Moment (1910-1939), Moment was originally launched in 1975. After decades of guidance by acclaimed writer Leonard Fein and biblical archeology pioneer Hershel Shanks, the magazine was relaunched in 2004 by journalist Nadine Epstein. Now 37 years old, Moment’s mission is unique in the Jewish world. It promotes the highest quality of journalism in the belief that a diverse range of voices and opinions is crucial for Jewish learning, important to the continuity and welfare of the Jewish people, and essential for combatting anti-Semitism. The magazine’s readership hails from across the Jewish spectrum and the community-at-large. It reaches young people and old—students, policy-makers, influential thinkers, affiliated and unaffiliated Jews, as well as non-Jews who wish to learn more about Jewish perspectives. This year, Moment won four awards from the Religion News Association (RNA), including first place for overall excellence in a magazine.
ABOUT THE DANIEL PEARL INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALISM INITIATIVE
The Initiative, established in 2010, makes it possible for young journalists to research and write in-depth stories about modern manifestations of anti-Semitism and other deeply-engrained prejudices. Moment solicits and selects writers, helps them develop their ideas, mentors them, provides them with stipends and edits and publishes their stories. The goal is to expose prejudice by providing talented up-and-coming journalists with the support necessary to focus on these difficult subjects. The Initiative’s stellar panel of advisors includes Paul Steiger, Wolf Blitzer, Martin Fletcher, Glenn Frankel, Clarence Page, Lynn Sweet and Robert Siegel.
