I love the energy a real machaneh experience brings to Judaism, awakening a Jewish light in kids and teenagers around the world. As a camper, I experienced the invaluable combination of lovely languid Shabbat afternoons followed by sizzling Saturday night midurot, the calm of crickets singing outside sleeping tents and the beautiful cacophony of ruach sessions rising from a dining hall. Looking at Judaism through the bright, wide eyes of a Jewish camper is to see a big-hearted, living religion at its best. At the moment, it’s hard to imagine sending off my two little girls to their first Jewish camp adventure in just a few short years. On the other hand, I can’t imagine not doing it. My eyes will be teary, but I’ll be sharing with them a special part of me, of our culture, history and, of course, our future.
